Smart cards are also being introduced in personal identification and entitlement schemes at regional, national, and international levels. Visa and MasterCard have agreed to an easy-to-implement version currently being deployed (2004-2006) in the USA. In 1998 a stable release of the specifications was available. Cards monly in circulation include Maestro (previously Switch), Solo, Visa Debit (previously Visa Delta) and Visa Electron. EMVco, the pany responsible for the long-term maintenance of the system, upgraded the specification in 2000 and most recently in 2004. The gold contact pads on the card enables electronic access to the chip. Roland Moreno actually patented the concept of the memory card in 1974. Contact Smart Cards have a small gold chip about A inch in diameter on the front. Microprocessor cards contain memory and microprocessor ponents. These refunds will, in some cases, be at the expense of the merchant, especially in mail order cases where the merchant cannot claim sight of the card, but in other cases, these costs must be borne by the card issuer.
