It is also different from a charge card (though this name is sometimes used by the public to describe credit cards), which requires the balance to be paid in full each month.

In some countries the debit card is multipurpose acting as the Automatic Teller Machine card for withdrawing cash and as a check guarantee card. Some critics claim that the savings are far less than the cost of implementing EMV, and thus many believe that the USA payments industry will opt to wait out the current EMV life cycle in order to implement new, contactless technology.   A secured credit card is a type of credit card secured by a deposit account owned by the cardholder. This is the first six digits for Mastercard and Visa cards. Such a card prevents fraud by a card number thief even if the card is not blocked, because the customer normally does not store any money on the sub-account and fraudulent transactions do not get authorized by the bank.

Many credit card customers receive rewards, such as frequent flier points, gift certificates, or cash back as an incentive to use the card. If, however, even $1.00 of the total balance remained unpaid, interest would be charged on the full $1,000 from the date of purchase until the payment is received.

A second type is the contactless smart card, in which the chip municates with the card reader through RFID induction technology (at data rates of 106 to 848 kbit/s).

Companies which do include a warning tend not to rm customers how long full repayment will take, i.e. they discourage users from making just minimum payments but do not explain why.

When paying in France with a Carte Bleue, one inserts the card into the merchant's terminal, then types the PIN, before the transaction is accepted. Not all chip cards contain a microprocessor (eg. the memory cards), therefore not all chip cards are necessarily also smart cards. The various standards emerging are local in focus and are not patible, though the MIFARE card from Phillips has a considerable market share in the US and Europe.

The bank also rejects local transactions, that is ones that are not made over the Inter, mail or telephone. Debit cards and secured credit cards are popular among college students who have not yet established a credit history, or the "unbanked". Picture post card.
